PRAYING THE WORD OF GOD FOR AMERICA
For the word of the Lord is living and active.
Sharper than any double edged sword…
…Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.
Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes
of him whom we must give an account.
Weeping with those in Sutherland Spring, Texas
It is a very dark day in America when a church service is interrupted by gunfire. Houses of worship should be sacred places, holy places, places of refuge and hope. Yet, the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, TX, became the site of our nation’s latest mass shooting yesterday. 26 were killed and 20 wounded. One family lost 8 extended family members. The church reports an average weekly attendance of about 50 and is in a town with a population of about 400. It is probable that almost every family in the area will be touched in some way by this tragedy.
Devin Patrick Kelley, the shooter, is dead, as well. We all want to know why someone would commit such a heinous act. Law enforcement officers believe it was a domestic dispute, but details are not yet fully clear.
We have had too many of these types of incidents recently. The reasons are varied, from terrorism to domestic disputes to completely random attacks where we may never know why. Ultimately, Satan is the one the Bible tells us seeks to kill, steal, and destroy. We, the Body of Christ, are called to watch and pray against him and his tactics. We can’t prevent every attack, but we must get on the offensive, Church. We must take seriously Christ’s mandate to watch and pray.
“And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.” (Nehemiah 4:9; ESV)
Join us in prayer:
- Intercede for all of those who lost loved ones in this shooting. Ask the Lord to tangibly comfort them and pray they turn to God in this season of grief.
- Ask God to miraculously heal each one wounded. Declare that there will not be one more soul lost.
- Ask God to fully expose the darkness in this situation and bring all the details of the reason for the attack into the light, so professionals of all types can prevent or combat this well in the future.
- Call for the watchmen to arise in the Church. We must watch over our churches and cities and schools, covering them in prayer. We must not be afraid, but must take seriously the enemy’s desire to kill, steal and destroy wherever he is able.
Let us create a blanket of protection over our communities with our ongoing intercession.
May God’s grace abound,
Mike and Cindy Jacobs
